This past January, we had the honor to host Mike Rowe and his crew at our ice sculpting studio to film an episode of his new show entitled “Somebody’s Gotta Do It.” which focuses on bringing the viewer face to face with passionate innovators, entrepreneurs, collectors, and hobbyists that use their passion to fulfill a greater, more unique purpose.
On Mike’s visit, he takes you step-by-step through the entirety of the hands-on process of ice sculpting and explores the distinct advantages and obstacles of ice and how we attuned our creative process to its advantage. From the purification process of our water to the different variety of effects that the different power tools, chisels, and chainsaws produce, all the way down to how we prepare and package our ice for an ensured safe delivery, we show how you how Art Below Zero gets the job done!
The idea for this show came from news segment, coincidentally titled “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” on a San Francisco news program that Mike Rowe hosted in the late 90’s/ early 2000’s. This exact newscast is what inspired his hit show “Dirty Jobs” which focused on the weird, gross and undesirable work aspects of his segment. The series ran for eight seasons and one season featuring Dirty Jobs in Australia. In 2013, Mike announced that he would be reviving the original idea and transforming it into a new show to be aired on CNN, holding the same title and thus coming full circle.
We would love to thank Mike and his crew for all of their hard work and professionalism. We had a blast working with all of you and we are incredibly excited about tomorrow night!
Catch us on CNN tomorrow night at 8PM central/standard time for “Somebody’s Gotta Do It.”, with Mike Rowe.
